Curling and Pin Curls.

Curling and Pin Curls
Equipment:
Comb, Bobbi Pins, Curling tong, paddle brush.

·         Section hair into small amounts, with a defined line.
·         Heat tong to 25 degrees, remembering to have the lead in a safe position so no one can trip.
·         Create a spiral with the hair and wrap around the tong on its side.
·         Curling hair is all about the direction you hold the curling iron, if you want the hair to curl forward make sure the barrel of the tong is facing toward you, and viscera.
·         After curling into small tight curls, wrap the warm hair around its self into a small circle and place a bobby pin through the middle until the curl has cooled, to help the curl set.

·         We then created pin curls flat on the head to create a very Elizabethan styled look.

Elizabethan Hair design.

I have created an Elizabethan hair design, on a sketch i have done of a face, to begin planning and experimenting with hair and The Elizabethans. For this design i have used wool as hair and i have Incorporated ribbons into the plait at the front of the hair, like they would have in Elizabethan times.
as i missed the lesson where everyone created these in pairs i have compromised and created one on my own. Using different materials to create a classic Elizabethan style.

Plaits and Buns.

Equipment-
Hair brush    bobby pins
Hair pins Hair band.

Fishtail plait:
Pick section of hair you want to plait.
Divided into two equal sections.
Take small piece of hair from the outside of one of the sections and bring across to the other section.
Repeat process until you have used all hair and plait is complete.
The looser fishtails are the better they look.
Tie with a hair band
Buns:
Brush hair until it is knot free and put hair up in a ponytail. (If someone has long thick hair then you can put it up in two section pony tails. First the top then the bottom as you will have more control in smaller section. You must have the perfect amount of  tension.
Double boble the hair if its thick and heavy as if will slide down if not secure.
Section hair in ponytail into for sections.
Start with the top section and make rounded shape with the hair. Wrap hair around your fingers and place on the head. Use bobby pins to as they hold in the structure. Place grip on the curve of hair.
Repeat process for other three sections.
Use hair pins to manipulate and move hair so that it all meets. Insert the pin at the base of hair.

French plaits:

Pick section of hair that you want to plait.
Divided hair into three equal sections.
Start by plaiting normally .
Then introduce a section of hair from the outside and bring over the top into the middle section.
Do this again on other side and continue down.

Keep good tension and french plaits look better tight and secure.

Drying hair and Drying Hair For Volume.

DRYING HAIR

.Start to the root and move down the hair shaft
.Keep the hair dryer moving to prevent burning of scalp and/or causing damage to the hair

Always ensure a thorough consultation before preparing to style hair and start communicating with your client/model. Ensure both verbal and non verbal communication is maintained through out the whole process.

.Dry bottom layers of hair first, clipping up hair on top to ensure thorough drying
.Use a cylinder brush
.Continuing with bottom sections of hair, place the hair dryer on the underside of your hair pulling the hair brush through the hair as you dry it section by section, gradually working your way up to top layers of hair
.Curl around brush at the ends by spinning the brush.
.These are my blow dry's finished product.

Contemporary Elizabethan Hair

Whilst i was at the illamasqua make-up awards yesterday i came across this inspirational contemporary take on an classic Elizabethan make-up and hair design, after talking to the make-up artist who created this about the look, she told me that she had done much research into the Elizabethans and wanted to create a dark twist on a classic. Watching this hair and make-up be created on stage was such an inspirational and amazing experience.
Here are a few other inspiring a few other images that resemble contemporary twists on Elizabethan style:

Wash and Blow Dry.

Before the wash and blow dry

After the wash and blow dry, i had created a lifted, big look with waves at the ends of the hair to create volume
throughout the hair. i was inspired to create this look after my model told me she wanted her hair to look like
the Kardashians.

Inspirational Plaits And Buns.

I have been researching a few plait and bun designs which i would like to practice in class in my studio lessons that could help me toward my Elizabethan project. Here are some that i have loved in particular.

Elizabethan Hair Quote

After looking into the Elizabethans hair routines i have had trouble finding a quote, and have ended up using this one:

"Then followeth the trimming and tricking of their heds in laying out their hair to the show, which of force must be curled, frizled and crisped, laid out on wreathes & borders from one eare to an other. And lest it should fall down, it is underpropped with forks, wyres, & I can not tel what, rather like grim stern monsters, than chaste christian matrones. Then on the edges of their bolstered heir (for it standeth crested round about their frontiers, & hanging over their faces like pendices or vails with glasse windows on every side) there is layd great wreathes of gold and silver, curiously wrought & cunningly applied to the temples of their heads. And for feare of lacking any thing to set foorth their pride withal, at their heyre, thus wreathed and crested, are hanged bugles, ouches, rings, gold, silver, glasses , & such other gewgawes and trinckets besides, which, for that they be innumerable, and I unskilfull in wemens terms, I cannot easily recount."
Philip Stubbes 1583
I have found some images that reference some of the words in this quote.

Elizabethan Project Introduction - Red Heads and Royalty.

During this term, we have been given an Elizabethan project theme.
Project brief:

RED HEADS AND ROYALTY

‘Redheads and Royalty’ is an extension of The New Elizabethans, make-up brief, however here the focus is on collating historical research and technical observations of the hairstyles used in the 16th and 17th century.
You may begin by considering the hairstyles you have identified in paintings from the Elizabethan era, but also consider that the various hairstyles and hair colours used by Elizabethan women also had references to their age, class and status.
You are required to create a variety of historically accurate Elizabethan hairstyles in class, but you will also devise a more contemporary version using clear references to a style of Elizabethan hair you are inspired by.
Develop the project by referencing contemporary versions of Elizabethan hairstyles – do this by looking through newspapers, magazines and websites. Gather visual evidence that references Elizabethan hair and begin to consider how you may adapt it to a contemporary style.
How can you use the ideas within both historical and contemporary images to inform the design of a contemporary hairstyle?
You must suggest through image and text, at least 3 solutions of how you will achieve this.
Write a short analysis of how you have interpreted the contemporary hairstyle. What do you intend it to say about the wearer?
Photograph a member of your class and create a hairstyle for them. You must use your consultation notes to assess them first.
Don’t forget to list your research sources (magazines, books, newspapers, films, books, primary research etc), in the bibliography of your sketchbook/blog.
You must clearly document the development and rehearsal of this style in preparation for a 2-hour timed assessment.  - http://mycourse.solent.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=8019&section-=0#section-0
I am so excited about this brief, and i have so many ideas and concepts which i will be sharing on this blog, leading up to the final end piece.

Wild and Smart

Smart: I feel this hair style shouts smart and tidy to me as it reflects a common hair style in the 50’s which many house wife’s would have fashioned whilst going about their daily routines. In the 50’s women where just starting to become a lot more fashion and hair conscious, after the war women let their own personality’s shine though there fashion.

Wild: The sixties was a very “Wild” era in general  generating the masses to express their wild side,  this hair style is the opposite to the 50’s style hair, as reflects the saying “Let your hair down” to the extreme back combing and big hair where the name of the game.
