Bibliography

Project Conclusion

This is my overall all conclusion to my Elizabethan project.I have enjoyed this project hugely, from learning about the traditional Elizabethans, how much the Elizabethans have inspired today's culture to finally creating my contemporary Elizabethan look.

As i began research in September i had already started creating a look in my head, which slowly developed throughout the project into my final images which i did last week. i am very happy with them as i feel they have everything i had imagined from the very beginning. Also creating Georgia's designs and learning about all of her inspiration was amazing and it went really well.

I have found inspiration in places i never thought i would find any during this project from hair in my sink to my dinner, the Queen Elizabeth The First will always be in the back of my mind as a small part of inspiration for everything i do from now on.

Timed Asessment - My Design Final Images

After the assessment was finished we took the photos of the look and they came out so perfectly I am so happy with the work Georgia has done to follow my designs, they look amazing and express everything I was trying to show when I put together all my inspiration and influences thought out this project.

Practicing My Designs

Me and Georgia decided to Practice my finished look lots of times before the times assessment so that we were prepared when Monday came around and there was nothing to worry about. these are some images from when we practiced, every time we practiced the better Georgia got at creating exactly what i wanted, so that buy the time we did our final practice it was perfect and also we had time to spare!

Inspiration mood Board

Mood board
I have decided to create a mood board that links all of my inspiration for my final look from over the semester before the assessment. This mood board captures all different forms of influence!

Starting obliviously with Queen Elizabeth, from all my research this image is my favorite of her the orange colours and her ginger flowing hair reflect everything about the Elizabethans, and there royal colors. But as i wanted something a little bit more outside the box other than just using one form of inspiration and twisting it slightly.
i went into researching harajuku girls in japan, as they use alot of decoration in there hair much like Queen Elizabeth used to except instead if pearls, i wanted to use flowers as a sign of innocence, which relates to the motley crew lyrics i have found saying about the flowers and razors in her hair show innocence, Elizabeth may have been innocent but she had a power as sharp as razor blades. So by using buns as the main feature on top of the head surrounded by flowers, and also spraying the hair gold, i am incorporating the harajuku influences with the buns on top of the head, with loads of decoration, but the flowers show Elizabeth's innocence and the gold shows royalty. The buns on top also resemble my New Elizabethan influences which was George Lucas, the writer of start wars, the hair shows aspects of princess Lai's hair in the films.
Then the pin curls around the face are a Elizabethan Tradition.

250 Word Self project Evaluation

On receiving Georgia’s face charts, she gave me excellent instructions and diagrams to follow which made the whole task a lot easier from the beginning. We practiced many times leading up to the assessment each time becoming better and better at creating the full look.

During the timed assessment, I felt very pressured and tense but after creating the full hair design with no mistakes or panicking, I feel I worked to my full potential even though it was slightly changed at the least minute by Georgia adding a headdress to the design. When it came to the make-up, I created the base, then it came to the part which I struggled with the most which was the eye brows. Initially I made them uneven and had to rub them out and start again. Looking back I should have practiced the eye brows a little more than the rest of the look which I felt very confident with leading up to the assessment. I managed to do the rest of the make-up with no mistakes. Although I was still making small adjustments when there were only thirty seconds to go, I couldn't have worked any faster throughout the whole assessment without making  mistakes or missing parts out and I am confident that the last second alterations and perfections enhanced the overall outcome. Personally I am very pleased with myself and my final creation as I never thought in the first semester of being here I would be able to create something I’m so proud of that I didn't even design.

Final Images - Gorgias

Timed assessment - Georgia design
These are the final images from the times assessment where i had to create gorgias designs on her in a time limit which was of one and a half hours not including the time we had to take the photos of the finished look.
The assessment went very well with minimum panic's and mostly calm behavior. I am very proud with the completed look with the hair and the make-up expressing exactly what she had asked of me.

instructions

These are my instructions which i have written and a small diagram on how my hair should look at the end.

Georgia's design Practice

We practiced Gorgias design multiple times, each time i become more and more confident with the complete look, the favorite part of the look for me was created the huge victory roles on the top of her head, which i thought turned out very well , i used to create vintage hair at vintage markets for people who would come along with there 50's style dresses and so many bags filled with crusting antiques, where i would use allot of victory rolls, pin curls ect. so i am experienced in that area.

Final ideas Presentation

This is my journey through royalty and red heads.
I began this journey by researching Elizabethan hair techniques and designs, some of the techniques I learnt such as pin curling stood out to me in particular as, I have always been interested in different techniques of curling. They can transform hairstyles into a vintage era. I looked into classic Elizabethan hair styles which are big, frizzed and curled. I began loosening these curls with my mind and attempting to create a more contemporary  version of them in my imagination by taking the curls out one by one and picturing a whole other hair style.  I attended the Illamasqua Distinction in Make-up Artistry Awards 2013 where one of the contenders had created Elizabethan style hair. I found this inspiring and looked into contemporary versions of Elizabethan styles, it hadn't occurred to me to use different multi-colored hair within my designs until I saw her creation.
First Comptemp /Elizabethan creation:
The first modern hair design I made into a Elizabethan inspired style, was a bun with a French plait leading into the bun up the back of the hair. After experimenting with this hair design, it worked out technically difficult to create on someone else rather than yourself. I added ribbon to the hairstyle to add in more of an Elizabethan look. But after returning to this hairstyle I decided that it looked a little too simplistic and not detailed enough.
Second Comtemp/Elizabethan creation:
This is the second style I created which has beehive at the front of the head and plaits are spiraled round at the back of the head.  I added plaits and made the beehive a lot bigger; to match up to the volume Elizabethans had their hair. After creating this look on me multiple times it all worked technically, but I was very simple to create and I didn't feel it would push someone to their full technical potential. I also think it was a little too Elizabethan meaning it contained hints of a pantomime dame which is not the look I wanted to express.
Third Contemp/Elizabethan creation:
Finally my third creation, this comtemp hair design started as a simple double bun with a sharp center parting, I then added pin curls surrounding the face and also clip in plastic flowers running through the entire design, to add twists on the Elizabethans who used to pin jewels into their hair I thought the flowers would add more of a modern/innocence to the look. As innocence was a big deal in the Elizabethan times.

CHOSEN IDEA:
After long contemplation on both ideas, I finally came to the decision with the assistance of Seema and the class to create the double bun hair style with added pin curls, because it combines the classic English style of the Elizabethans with the versatile multi-cultured world of today, with inspiration spiraling from high fashion to Japanese harajuku girls.  Also through my experiments creating the hair styles, I feel this challenge but is create able in the time limit.
How to communicate the idea:
I have created a step by step simple guide on how to create the simple buns, and then how to add the other materials into the buns. Then another simple guide on how to create the pin curls around the face.  I have included drawings to follow as well.
Materials: ribbon, plastic flowers, Bobbi pins.

ASSURE I CAN ACHIEVE MY BEST:

I can assure I can achieve my best throughout my assessment, by following my partners  step by step instructions to the best of my abilities, but also using my imagination if I have any technical problems within the design and not panicking. By having all of my hair equipment, and by also preparing all of the added materials for my design and making sure my instructions are easy to follow.

My Chosen Idea

I saw this image whilst researching into my final Elizabethan bun idea, it inspired me to maybe add bits of colored hair and bows or other random objects into the hair style to add more contemporary influences.

Padding- practical

Padding
First start off with sections the front of the hair and Tying back the rest.
Then plate and pin to the head two small strands of hair to create a barrier, separating the front and back.
Then curl all of the front of the hair with curling tongs, in tight ringlets.
Then attach the wadding by starting from the top and rolling down the hair, made out of tights stuffed with couch role and attach onto the hair with grips and lay the curls over the top creating an Instant beehive.
You can then style the curls back round it creat a more Elizabethan looking hair style.
Crimping

When crimping the hair you get the hair in small sections starting at the root and hold the cimpers on for about 5 seconds depending on the condition of the hair then follow that movement down the hair to the ends, and continue all over the head.

Frizzing

First prepare the hair by spraying it with a firm hold protection spray which helps keep it stiff when creating the look.

The wrap the small section of hair in a figure of eight around a geisha grip.
After wrapping up to root, slide a pin down the middle to hold it into place.
Then place the straighteners on and off the hair not holding it on for too long in order not to damage the hair.

Continue for 5 to 10 minutes.

Then unwrap hair, it will be completely frizzed.
Then start styling!

Contemporary Elizabethan hair experiments

I found these two standard contemporary hair styles which i love, and then i drew on them to make them into a more Elizabethan inspired hair.First Comptemp /Elizabethan creation:
The first modern hair design I made into a Elizabethan inspired style, was a bun with a French plait leading into the bun up the back of the hair. After experimenting with this hair design, it worked out techinically difficult to create on someone else rather than yourself. I added ribbon to the hairstyle to add in more of an Elizabethan look. But after returning to this hairstyle I decided that it looked a little too simplistic and not detailed enough.
Second Comtemp/Elizabethan creation:
This is the second style I created which has beehive at the front of the head and plaits are spiralled round at the back of the head.  I added plaits and made the beehive a lot bigger; to match up to the volume Elizabethans had their hair. After creating this look on me multiple times it all worked technically, but I was very simple to create and I didn’t feel it would push someone to their full technical potential. I also think it was a little too Elizabethan meaning it contained hints of a pantomime dame which is not the look I wanted to express.
Third Contemp/Elizabethan creation:
Finally my third creation, this comtempory hair design started as a simple double bun with a sharp centre parting, I then added pin curls surrounding the face and also clip in plastic flowers running through the entire design, to add twists on the Elizabethans who used to pin jewels into their hair I thought the flowers would add more of a modern/innocence to the look. Fallen hair

I cut my flat mates hair the other day, and the hair in the sink reminded me of the scene in the film Elizabeth, it echoed the scene when she cuts her long flowing locks off before battle to give we a new strong less childlike appearance. The brown hair falling into the sink, half down the plug and all over my floor, it was like her innocence falling being cut off from her body.

Curling and Pin Curls.

Curling and Pin Curls
Equipment:
Comb, Bobbi Pins, Curling tong, paddle brush.

·         Section hair into small amounts, with a defined line.
·         Heat tong to 25 degrees, remembering to have the lead in a safe position so no one can trip.
·         Create a spiral with the hair and wrap around the tong on its side.
·         Curling hair is all about the direction you hold the curling iron, if you want the hair to curl forward make sure the barrel of the tong is facing toward you, and viscera.
·         After curling into small tight curls, wrap the warm hair around its self into a small circle and place a bobby pin through the middle until the curl has cooled, to help the curl set.

·         We then created pin curls flat on the head to create a very Elizabethan styled look.

One finished pin curl.

Elizabethan Hair design.

I have created an Elizabethan hair design, on a sketch i have done of a face, to begin planning and experimenting with hair and The Elizabethans. For this design i have used wool as hair and i have Incorporated ribbons into the plait at the front of the hair, like they would have in Elizabethan times.
as i missed the lesson where everyone created these in pairs i have compromised and created one on my own. Using different materials to create a classic Elizabethan style.

Plaits and Buns.

Equipment-
Hair brush    bobby pins
Hair pins Hair band.

Fishtail plait:
Pick section of hair you want to plait.
Divided into two equal sections.
Take small piece of hair from the outside of one of the sections and bring across to the other section.
Repeat process until you have used all hair and plait is complete.
The looser fishtails are the better they look.
Tie with a hair band
Buns:
Brush hair until it is knot free and put hair up in a ponytail. (If someone has long thick hair then you can put it up in two section pony tails. First the top then the bottom as you will have more control in smaller section. You must have the perfect amount of  tension.
Double boble the hair if its thick and heavy as if will slide down if not secure.
Section hair in ponytail into for sections.
Start with the top section and make rounded shape with the hair. Wrap hair around your fingers and place on the head. Use bobby pins to as they hold in the structure. Place grip on the curve of hair.
Repeat process for other three sections.
Use hair pins to manipulate and move hair so that it all meets. Insert the pin at the base of hair.

French plaits:

Pick section of hair that you want to plait.
Divided hair into three equal sections.
Start by plaiting normally .
Then introduce a section of hair from the outside and bring over the top into the middle section.
Do this again on other side and continue down.

Keep good tension and french plaits look better tight and secure.

Drying hair and Drying Hair For Volume.

DRYING HAIR

.Start to the root and move down the hair shaft
.Keep the hair dryer moving to prevent burning of scalp and/or causing damage to the hair

.Spray with a protective spray concentrating on dry ends
.Blast hair all over with dryer to remove excess moisture
.Dry bottom layers of hair first, clipping up hair on top to ensure thorough drying
.Use a cylinder brush
.Continuing with bottom sections of hair, place the hair dryer on the underside of your hair pulling the hair brush through the hair as you dry it section by section, gradually working your way up to top layers of hair
.Curl around brush at the ends by spinning the brush.
.These are my blow dry's finished product.

Hair Consultation

HAIR CONSULTATION

Before styling a clients hair preparation is of up-most importance
During the consultation the following should be adhered to

.The hair should be kept away from head to protect the scalp
.Ensure hair is not damaged which may prevent use of straighteners

Contemporary Elizabethan Hair

Whilst i was at the illamasqua make-up awards yesterday i came across this inspirational contemporary take on an classic Elizabethan make-up and hair design, after talking to the make-up artist who created this about the look, she told me that she had done much research into the Elizabethans and wanted to create a dark twist on a classic. Watching this hair and make-up be created on stage was such an inspirational and amazing experience.
Here are a few other inspiring a few other images that resemble contemporary twists on Elizabethan style:

Wash and Blow Dry.

Before the wash and blow dry

After the wash and blow dry, i had created a lifted, big look with waves at the ends of the hair to create volume
throughout the hair. i was inspired to create this look after my model told me she wanted her hair to look like
the Kardashians.
